I’ve been in uniform for over 20 years now and tragically, I have worn it all.
From those awful 1980s pattern combats, to those weird mustard yellow ‘94 smocks with the zips, the revolution that was CS95, threadbare desert combats and now MTP, every variation of windproof, waterproof and even gas proof clothing if you’re one of those weirdos that count NBC suits as clothing.
But this smock is absolutely the best thing I’ve worn. It feels quality, like someone has actually given a sh*t about the people who wear it. It feels robust and hard wearing and gives you the feeling it’s not going to let you down, or rip to bits on the first bit of gorse bush you encounter.
It’s made of what feels like a cordua type material so it’s initially quite stiff but after a few wears the fabric starts to relax a bit and become more comfortable. It’s not soft like a windproof or a Keela, it’s reassuringly tough, like a decent quality bergan. Inside is lined with a waterproof lining. I am actually looking forward to some crappy weather so I can really test it against the elements. I don’t think it will left me down!
It’s got everything you need and nothing you don’t. Wired hood to keep the hood off your face. Little strap on the back so you can fold the hood away when not in use. Nice big bulky pockets on the bottom and little ones at the top to prevent you overloading yourself. Velcro on the arms so you can add the badges people seem to love these days.
Like all clothing, you’ll need to wear it at the right time to get the real value out of it. It’s quite a heavy bit of kit, so it’s really going to pay dividends on a windy range or a soaking Exercise, but it’s not going to be appropriate for heavy tabbing or hot weather - it’s called the Brecon smock because presumably, that’s what it’s best for.
If you like being warm and dry, this is the smock for you. Yes, the list price might seem a bit steep, but like everything in life, you get what you pay for.
At the moment my Brecon smock is hanging next to my Barbour jacket in my wardrobe and they feel like they’re related. Neither is cheap, but both are premium brands that will last you forever if you look after them. Don’t think of it as another bit of kit - think of it as a heirloom!

Great fit and quality. I love the contrasting collar.
The Suffolk lambs wool gilet is beautifully made, offering exceptional warmth and comfort with the adjustable classic or tailored fit. Soft, breathable, and effortlessly stylish, it’s the ideal layer for cooler days and I can’t wait for winter!
Quality is impeccable, service surpasses even that.
A truly beautiful bit of clothing. Fits great, has a nice “weight” to it which adds to the quality. Good sized pockets with zips. Warm, extremely well made. 100% British made too which should be all you need to know. Company has great moral values too owned by a serving member of our Armed forces. I’m already saving for my next purchase!
This gilet is fantastic.
With quality manufacturing easily adjusted to fit and it’s a great British product
Robust and well built.
Heavyweight wool - I think will keep out the biting East Anglian wind in the winter. Very high quality construction. Delighted.
Great looking warm top , great on my old 1963 Triumph 650 on warm days with cut off sleeves , steve McQueen would have loved one , it would have made the king of cool even cooler
